TIME FACTORS in the Utilization of a Mixture of AMINO ACIDS (PROTEIN HYDROLYSATE) and DEXTROSE Given Intravenously

ROBERT ELMAN M.D.1

1 From the Department of Surgery, Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri

The existence of two time factors in the metabolism of amino acids given intravenously is shown by nitrogen balance studies in 4 patients given infusions of an inadequate caloric mixture of glucose and amino acids, each patient serving as his own control. The findings indicate a greater utilization of amino acids (1) when glucose was infused at the same time, and (2) when the mixture was infused at a slower rate. These findings confirm observations made by others in humans and in animals with oral feeding.
