Effect of Sorbitol on Iron Absorption in Man

ALVAR LORÍA M.S.1, L. SÁNCHEZ MEDAL M.D.1, and J. ELIZONDO M.D.1

1 From the Instituto Nacional de la Nutricion, Mexico D.F., Mexico

Comparative Fe59 iron utilization tests were carried out in nine normal and three iron-deficient subjects. The utilization of iron in each subject was determined after receiving a ferrous sulfate solution alone, and after receiving a ferrous sulfate solution, of the same concentration, to which sorbitol had been added.

Higher iron absorption from the sorbitol-containing solution was observed in ten of twelve patients, values being 1.35 to 2.37 times their own controls. The results strongly suggest that sorbitol improves iron absorption in man.
