Protein-Rich Foods in Calorie-Protein Malnutrition

Problems of Evaluation

PAUL GYÖRGY M.D.1 and CAROL PERNA B.S.1

1 From the Department of Pediatrics, Philadelphia General Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

In a program of protein supplementation the variations in protein efficiency ratio values which will occur with different supplements of vitamins (trace elements have not yet been studied) should be considered.

There is no certainty that the basal diet of the malnourished child contains the vitamins necessary for enhancement of protein efficiency ratio values. If economic and technical conditions, acceptability, storage tests, etc., permit it, protein-rich foods which give high protein efficiency ratio values with the modified method (without full vitamin supplements) are in principle preferable to protein-rich foods which give high values with the standard method (full vitamin supplement).
