The Use of Chorionic Gonadotropin Hormone in the Treatment of Obesity A Double-Blind Study

BARRY W. FRANK MC, USA1

1 From the U. S. Army Hospital, Medical Service, Fort Carson, Colorado

A double-blind study was conducted on twenty-seven men and twenty-one women in order to determine the effect of chorionic gonadotropin hormone treatment on the obese outpatient. While subsisting on a 1,030 calorie diet, twenty-four subjects received 200 I.U. of gonadotropin three times a week, and twenty-four subjects received a placebo injection of the same volume. The mean weight loss of the group treated with the hormone was 12.3 pounds and of the control group 11.5 pounds. There was no significant difference in weight loss, subjective symptoms of hunger or body measurements between the two groups.
