Changes in the Fatty Acid Pattern of the Adipose Tissue of Obese Subjects while on a Reducing Regimen

I. MACDONALD M.D., PH.D.1 and P. J. C. BARRY M.D., M.R.C.P.I.1

1 From the Departments of Physiology and Physiotherapy, Guy's Hospital Medical School, London, England

The fatty acid composition of the adipose tissue of twenty-seven female and sixteen male obese patients was studied while they were on a weight reducing regimen. The loss in body weight was paralleled by the diminution in skinfold thickness, that is, loss of subcutaneous fat.

In men, changes occurred in the proportion of stearic, oleic and linoleic acids as the experiment proceeded. There were no such changes in women.
