Iron Metabolism in Premature Infants

III. Utilization of Iron as Related to Growth in Infants with Low Birth Weight

MARTIN K. GORTEN M.D.1

1 From the Department of Pediatrics, University of Maryland, Baltimore, Maryland

Sixteen premature infants weighing less than 1,600 gm at birth were offered from the beginning a formula containing 12 mg. of ferrous iron per quart of feeding (study group). The control group of fifteen small premature infants were offered the same formula without iron. The dietary regimen otherwise was the same for both groups. Vitamins were included in the formulas, and all infants received solid foods by standard pediatric practice. From determination of hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit and weight at regular intervals to age eighty weeks, the rates of iron utilization were calculated.
