The Iron Content of Sweat in Normal Adults

CHARLES A. COLTMAN JR. MC, USAF1 and NANCY J. ROWE B.SC.1

1 From the Ohio Tuberculosis Hospital and the Ohio State University College of Medicine, Columbus, Ohio

A simple, rapid method for the collection and analysis of the iron content of sweat is described. A review of the literature reveals that there is considerable variation in the iron content of sweat when iron lost in both exfoliation of epidermis and sweating is considered. There is reasonable agreement on the iron content of cell-free sweat, and in this study it amounts to an average of 17.2 ggrg. per cent in the normal male or female adult.
