The Amino Acid Content of Sweat in Normal Adults

CHARLES A. COLTMAN JR. MC, USAF1, NANCY J. ROWE B.SC.1, and ROBERT J. ATWELL M.D.1

1 From the Ohio Tuberculosis Hospital and the Ohio State University College of Medicine, Columbus, Ohio

A method is presented for determination of the amino acid composition of pure sweat using pilocarpine iontophoresis and high-voltage paper electrophoresis combined with paper chromatography for amino acid analyses. Twenty-one amino acids were detected in sweat samples from 151 normal adults. The method developed is convenient and rapid. These data are related to the results of similar studies performed by other investigators and compared to the information available on plasma and urinary amino acids.
