Nitrogen balances were determined in twenty-four children with chronic severe protein malnutrition. Twelve of them were fed soya milk and twelve cow's milk.
Using the same milk formulas it was shown that nitrogen retention in children with pitting edema upon admission to the hospital differed from that in children without edema.
This finding is important in the study of the pathogenesis of the disease as well as in the practical aspects of its treatment. Because infant malnutrition is a multiple deficiency disease, the clinical picture and the importance of nutrients other than protein and calories should be considered in its treatment.
