Measurement of TBW and ECW in 20 children aged 1-6 years reveals that TBW was relatively constant at about 59% of body weight after 1 year of age. Extracellular water, however, did not stabilize to young adult levels of 26-27% of body weight until the 2nd and 3rd years. Intracellular water also took longer to stabilize, plateauing at 32% of body weight by 3 years of age.
