Hematologic data from 60 children with anemia associated with protein-calorie malnutrition in Chiengmai, Thailand, are presented and discussed. The patients were divided into two groups, group I (41 cases) receiving a hospital high protein diet only, and group II (19 cases) receiving, in addition to protein, 250 µg of vitamin E orally for 5 days.
Children receiving only protein became progressively anemic while those treated with vitamin E demonstrated a statistically significant rise in reticulocyte and hemoglobin levels. General clinical improvement associated with rising total proteins and increase in body weight occurred in both groups I and II.
It is recognized that this is an anemia of multiple etiology but the results presented demonstrate a consistent hematologic response to treatment with vitamin E.
