The relationship between the plasma vitamin E level and the results of the peroxide hemolysis test was studied in 233 subjects. It was confirmed that the hemolysis test is a useful index of plasma vitamin E levels.
A negative test strongly suggests a plasma level above 0.3 mg/100 ml and hemolysis in excess of 10% strongly suggests a plasma level below this value. Intermediate levels of hemolysis are a less certain guide to the plasma level.
It is suggested that in view of its simplicity the hemolysis test is of considerable value as a screening procedure.
