A Nutritional Epidemiologic Investigation of 642 New York City Children

GEORGE CHRISTAKIS M.D., ANOUSH MIRIDJANIAN M.D., L. NATH M.D., H. S. KHURANA D.D.S., CATHERINE COWELL M.A., MORTON ARCHER M.P.H., OSCAR FRANK PH.D., HERMAN ZIFFER M.D., HERMAN BAKER PH.D., and GEORGE JAMES M.D.

A comprehensive nutrition survey has been conducted in which 642 elementary schoolchildren participated. Demographic, socioeconomic, clinical, and biochemical parameters were measured. Subgroups of children were identified whose diet histories, hemograms, and amino acid ratios were suggestive of suboptimal nutritional status. Adipose tissue aspiration studies of a subgroup of 75 children revealed significant differences in fatty acid composition when analyzed by dietary and metabolic factors.

The findings of this survey warrant clinical and public health preventive and therapeutic measures.
