The absorption of amino acids from mixtures of these compounds simulating the composition of casein was studied in a loop of rat jejunum in situ for an incubation period of 15 min. When leucine was omitted from the amino acid mixture, it was found that isoleucine, valine, methionine, phenylalanine, tyrosine, serine, and glutamic acid were absorbed to a significantly greater extent than when a mixture containing all the amino acids was used. No significant differences in the absorption of amino acids present in the mixture were observed when either isoleucine-devoid or threonine-devoid mixtures were incubated.
