Use of Barium Sulfate as an Unabsorbable Fecal Marker

WILLIAM G. FIGUEROA M.D.1, TRUDE JORDAN 1, and SAMUEL H. BASSETT M.D.1

1 From the Research Service, Veterans Administration Center, and the Department of Medicine, Center for the Health Sciences, University of California Los Angeles

A method utilizing BaSO4 as an inert fecal marker is described. This method requires only the accurate weighing of the barium sulfate. No toxicity was noted with the material. The utilization of this material for correction of variability of fecal flow in calcium-balance studies permits more accurate assessment of the balance.
