Evaluation of a Protein-Rich Mixture Based on Vegetable Foods of Middle Eastern Countries

Y. MATOTH 1, E. ELIAN 1, and E. GRUENBERG 1

1 From the Department of Pediatrics, Sharon Hospital and Rogoff-Wellcome Medical Research Institute, Beilinson Medical Center, Petah Tikva, Israel, and the Department of Pediatrics, Tel Aviv University Medical School, Tel Aviv, Israel

A protein-rich mixture (VPM) prepared from chick peas, sesame flour, and low-fat soybean flour was evaluated in infants in a controlled metabolic study.

Nitrogen retentions and weight gains in infants fed VPM compared favorably with those of infants fed a cow's milk diet. Supplementation of VPM with l-lysine and l-methionine did not increase nitrogen retention. Incaparina was evaluated in infants. Weight gains and nitrogen retentions in infants fed Incaparina were similar to those of infants on VPM.
