1 From the Central Pathology Laboratory, Singapore, Malaya, and the Eastern Command Laboratory, London, England
A description of the intestinal lesion seen in tropical sprue in Singapore is presented, and the severity of the lesion is correlated with the duration of symptoms and intestinal malabsorption. The dissecting microscopical and corresponding histological appearances are compared.
The ileal lesion is described and it is shown to be less severe than the corresponding jejunal changes.
The response of the jejunal mucosa to treatment is described and the effects of folic acid and antibiotics are compared. Antibiotics appeared to produce a more rapid reduction in the villous swelling and cellular infiltration of the lamina propria than folic acid.
A brief description of the pathological changes in tropical sprue reported from other geographical areas has been given and compared with those seen in Singapore.
These changes are discussed in relationship to the possible pathogenesis of the disease.
