In a controlled human metabolic study, addition of 8 g/day of yeast RNA to a low protein, purine-free formula diet produced elevated serum and urinary uric acid levels that could be reduced by allopurinol, an inhibitor of uric acid formation. Administration of 100 mg/day of allopurinol also led to a rise in urinary hypoxanthine + xanthine, which was less than the fall in urinary uric acid. Since total oxypurine excretion was reduced, it appears that allopurinol effectively suppresses both endogenous purine synthesis and synthesis of uric acid from exogenous purines.
