Fasting Plasma Cholesteryl Esters in Diabetic Children Consuming Corn Oil

E. C. ALBUTT B.SC.1 and G. W. CHANCE M.B., M.R.C.P., D.C.H.1

1 From the University of Birmingham Institute of Child Health, Francis Road, Birmingham 16, and Birmingham Children's Hospital, Birmingham, England

The fatty acid composition of the fasting plasma cholesteryl ester fraction was determined in samples obtained from children with diabetes mellitus who have been consuming corn oil and corn oil products in their diet since diagnosis 4-7 years ago. These results have been compared with those obtained from diabetic children consuming a standard diabetic diet and from normal children. The percentage of cholesteryl esters as cholesteryl linoleate was maximal at 76% when adipose tissue linoleic acid was 30%. Cholesteryl linoleate appeared to increase mainly at the expense of cholesteryl oleate.
