Amino acid concentration as a factor regulating albumin synthesis in protein-depletion states was tested by perfusing livers with blood from malnourished animals in which the concentration of branched-chain amino acids was reduced. These livers synthesized significantly less albumin than did livers perfused with normal blood. Addition of branched-chain amino acids to the perfusate restored the albumin synthesis rate to normal.
