The influence of adequate and low tryptophan intakes and the spacing of meals on the concentration of tryptophan in blood plasma of normal adult men was examined. For both levels of dietary tryptophan, when four meals were given daily, at 8:00 AM, 12:00 noon, 4:00 PM, and 9:00 PM, the plasma tryptophan level rose between 1:00 AM and 8:00 AM and decreased between 8:00 AM and 12:00 noon. Plasma tryptophan concentration did not increase in the early morning hours when six meals were offered at 4-hr intervals throughout the day.
