The influence of the level of dietary protein on human utilization of magnesium was investigated in three metabolic-balance studies. Protein was supplied at several low levels and magnesium in restricted amounts was as nearly constant as possible. Young women were in magnesium equilibrium or positive balance on intakes of 178-196 mg magnesium and 30-48 g protein daily. These data, in contrast to reports in the literature that approximately 300 mg magnesium are necessary for equilibrium in women receiving recommended allowance of protein, suggest that magnesium utilization is altered by the level of dietary protein.
