Absorption of 3H-vitamin D3 and 14C-vitamin D3 oleate has been compared in rats with lymph fistulas. The vitamin D3 ester is not absorbed as well as the free vitamin. Both appear in lymph as the free vitamin, esters and more polar compound(s). Vitamin D3 oleate is hydrolyzed and vitamin D3 can be esterified with oleic acid by rat pancreatic juice and by porcine pancreatic extract. The affinity of these enzyme systems for vitamin D3 is considerably less than that for cholesterol.
