Nutritional Anemias in Early Childhood

CALVIN WOODRUFF M.D.1

1 From the University of Missouri School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, Columbia, Missouri

The anemia of protein-calorie malnutrition in patients with hypoalbuminemia appears to have a cohesive pattern with geographical variations. The anemia of marasmus, meaning malnourished infants with normal serum proteins, has received almost no attention. Iron deficiency in the United States continues to be a major clinical problem. It is suggested that a critical evaluation of the role of excessive cow's milk consumption and occult blood loss should be carried out. Iron intake may not be the only etiologic factor in this anemia.
