Thirty premature infants with birth weights between 1,418 and 2,077 g were fed a new carbohydrate-free formula to which glucose, sucrose, or lactose was added. No statistical difference was established among groups for percent weight loss, days to regain birth weight, weekly weight gains, or caloric efficiency. The satisfactory clinical course and growth of these infants suggest further clinical trials to explore the diagnostic and therapeutic uses of such carbohydrate-free formulas.
