Early Events in the Stimulation by Zinc of Cytochrome c Synthesis in Ustilago

LETICIA R. MENDIOLA 1 and C. A. PRICE 1

1 From the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology (AES), Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N. J. 08903

Zinc stimulates cytochrome c synthesis in Ustilago sphaerogena under conditions where the net rates of synthesis of protein, DNA, and RNA are unaffected. We find that zinc 65 enters the cell as a first-order process within 1 min, that the incorporation of leucine-14C into cytochrome c is increased within 6 min, and that small but repeatable differences in RNA profiles are detectable within 15 min.
