Studies were carried out to determine the effects of administering a large single dose of oil-soluble and water-miscible preparations of vitamin A by different routes on serum vitamin A levels in children as well as the hepatic storage in animals. The results showed that the maximal hepatic storage was achieved by the oral administration of an oil-soluble preparation although the highest serum levels were obtained with parenteral administration of water-miscible preparations.
It was observed that the administration of 300,000 IU of an oil-soluble preparation of Vitamin A given as a single dose to undernourished children was able to sustain levels of serum vitamin A in the normal range for as long a period as 6 months.
