The absorption of dietary iron in normal and iron-deficient pregnant women has been studied. It is demonstrated that dietary iron absorption is increased in the latter half of pregnancy in normal pregnant women and more so in iron-deficient pregnant women. In order to meet the iron requirements of pregnancy, the predominantly cereal-based diets of the type used by poor Indian women should provide 40 mg of iron.
