The Nutritive Value of a Cow's Milk-Banana Formula for Infant Feeding

J. E. DUTRA DE OLIVEIRA M.D.1 and THEREZINHA ARRUDA CARNEIRO M.D.1

1 From the Faculdade de Medicina (Medical School), Ribeirão Prêto (São Paulo), Brazil

A formula containing whole cow's milk powder, banana powder, and vegetable oil simulating human milk was studied considering its amino acid composition, biological value in rats, and nutritive value in infants 1-3 months old. The results obtained in infants fed the formula were excellent compared to groups receiving traditional cow's milk formula or breast feeding. The advantages in using babies for such testing and the value of such formulas for infant nutrition in developing countries are stressed.
