Serial samples of aspirated adipose tissue from miniature pigs either fed artificial diets or sow-fed were analyzed for fatty acid composition during the first 8 weeks of life. Those animals fed a medium-chain triglyceride diet were found to have an increased proportion of saturated fatty acids and greater concentrations of medium-chain fatty acids in adipose tissue lipids.
The newborn pig is similar in some respects to the low birth weight infant and may serve as a model for study of adipose tissue compartment growth.
