HOSSAIN A. RONAGHY M.D.1, ELFRIEDE KOHOUT M.D.1, and NASSER HADIDI PH.D.1

1 From Rural Medicine Program of the Departments of Medicine and Clinical Pathology, Pahlavi University, Shiraz, Iran

Height, clinical symptoms of nutritional deficiency, and laboratory parameters in a group of adolescent schoolchildren in southern Iran are reported. Growth retardation with heights below the 3rd percentile or 2 standard deviations of the Iowa Mean measures of chronic malnutrition in adolescents is associated with increased incidence of lower hemoglobin, serum protein, and albumin concentration. This is evidence that subnormal stature is particularly significant as an indicator of malnutrition.
