Low-cost technique for metabolic balance studies

Arthur G. Goldman 1 and Uriel S. Barzel 1

1 From the Renal Service and the Metabolic Endocrine Laboratory, Department of Medicine, Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center, 111 E 210th Street, Bronx, New York 10467, and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, New York, N.Y.

A technique is described whereby satisfactory metabolic balance studies can be done in an inexpensive manner, utilizing a frozen, pre-cooked diet and the services of housewives, living in the vicinity of the hospital, as part-time diet aides. This technique has been in use for the past 18 months at Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center, with good results.
