Following an initial interview on usual dietary intake, volunteers were contacted on a random day each month and given a 24-hr dietary recall interview. For 71 subjects data were obtained from eight or more monthly interviews. The variation within individuals is reported for specific nutrients, and nutrients with seasonal variation are identified. The number of 24-hr interviews required to obtain estimates of individual mean values within an approximately 20% margin of sampling error is presented for each nutrient. Correlation coefficients are reported between the data obtained in the interview of usual intake and the average of eight or more 24-hr recall interviews..
Correlation between serum cholesterol and selected nutrients is presented for dietary data based on usual diet and also the average of two, five, and eight 24-hr reports.
