Alteration of Shigella pathogenicity by other bacteria

Mitsuru Nakamura Ph.D.1

1 Professor and Chairman, Department of Microbiology, University of Montana, Missoula, Montana 59801

S. flexneri produced experimental keratoconjunctivitis in rabbit eyes. This capacity was related to the age of the culture, number of organisms inoculated, and the route of administration. The simultaneous inoculation of E. coli or B. bacteriovorus altered the pathologic activity of the Shigella. These bacteria either prevented the development of keratoconjunctivitis or reduced the length and severity of the eye reactions.

S. flexneri produced enterosorption in ligated ileal loops of rabbits. This activity of S. flexneri was eliminated or reduced by the simultaneous administration of B. bacteriovorus.
