The digestion and absorption of nitrogen along the intestinal tract of chicks were studied with the aid of yttrium 91 as a nonabsorbed reference substance. Digestion, as defined in these studies, occurred mostly up to the duodenal level, whereas most of the nitrogen absorption took place in the upper jejunum. Both processes continued along the entire small intestine. Dietary protein level did not significantly influence the pattern of digestion and absorption of nitrogen. In chicks infested with adult Ascaridia galli, a net secretion of nitrogen was observed in the duodenum; this nitrogen was reabsorbed in the jejunum. Thus, the overall digestion and absorption of nitrogen were not significantly influenced by the presence of the adult parasite.
