In summary, this conference was a timely meeting of experts interested in human protein-energy malnutrition. Their comments to some extent supported the conclusions published in the recent FAO/WHO Report on Energy and Protein Requirements, but they also revealed several cloudy areas of ignorance that demand attention. ln addition, the application of increasingly sophisticated methods in probing deficits produced by malnutrition is a healthy sign. There will undoubtedly be future FAO/WHO reports reflecting more extensive knowledge of protein and energy needs, and to these future discussions many of those from Japan and the United States at the present conference will have much to contribute.
