Lactose intolerance in young children and their parents

Lactose tolerance tests were performed on 34 healthy subjects from 9 families of African. Asian, or Latin American origin. Eleven (72%) of the adults and 4 (25%) of the children were found to be lactose intolerant or lactose non-digesters (blood glucose rise < 25 mg/100 ml). All children under 5 years of age were tolerant. All of the children normally consumed at least 1.5 cups of milk per day, whereas many parents consumed less. It is speculated that, despite genetic influence, the expected fall in intestinal lactase activity may be delayed in children who continue to have high levels of milk intake.
