An automated method for measuring urinary thiamin without isolating the thiamin is described. Two aliquots of sample are treated alike prior to measurement of thiochrome fluorescence, except that in the blank, addition of benzene-sulfonyl chloride and sodium hydroxide blocks oxidation of thiamin to thiochrome. Thus, fluorescence due to nonspecific substances can be subtracted. Quenching is negligible.
