Erythrocyte transketolase activity was measured on blood samples obtained from 417 Tennessee high school students as a means of evaluating their thiamin nutriture. When based on volume of whole blood, the normal values differed with respect to sex and ethnic group; when based on erythrocyte count, only a difference between ethnic groups was evident. The normal values for pentose disappearance ber billion erythrocytes by the analytical procedure is 2.39 ± 0.327 µmoles/hr for whites and 2.10 ± 0.372 µmoles/hr for blacks.
