Erratum

BEATON, G. H., AND L. D. SWISS. Evaluation of the nutritional quality of food supplies: prediction of "desirable" or "safe" protein:calorie ratios. Am. J. Clin. Nutr. 27: 485-504, 1974.

It has been pointed out to the authors that a number of typographical errors appear on page 488 of the paper. In the left hand column of that page, C, R, and D should have been written C, R and D in every instance.

It has been pointed out also that a more appropriate way of stating equation 3 on that page would be in the form of a probability statement. Thus, the sentence beginning "Then the standardized ...." might be deleted and the following, more correct phaseology used:

The prevalence of deficiency is then given as the probability that D < 0. D is, by definition, a normally distributed variable and can be standardized into a variable d with mean = 0 and standard deviation = 1. The probability to be evaluated can be written as:

[See equation in the PDF file]

This may be compared with a table of the standardized normal distribution to obtain the probability value and predict the prevalence of deficiency.

Equation 6 on page 490 would be written as a probability statement in a manner analogous to the above.

Note that these corrections in the text do not affect the predictions offered in the paper.
