Diabetes in older persons is encountered with increasing frequency (23). Those principles of therapy that have been developed primarily from experience with younger patients may need to be modified for safe and appropriate usage in the elderly. Similarly, standards for diagnosis of diabetes must be applied carefully. Increasing resources are becoming available to help the health professional treat the older person with diabetes (24).
