The National Evaluation of School Nutrition Programs: factors affecting student participation

KM Maurer

Results of the analysis of individual student participation data for the School Breakfast and Lunch Programs are described. The availability of the programs and participation rates for various subgroups of students are estimated. Multiple regression analysis (ordinary least squares) is also used to determine the effects of various factors on participation. For both the Lunch and Breakfast Programs meal price is the single most important predictor of participation. Using the results from the participation analyses, estimates are obtained of the effects that changes in eligibility criteria for free and reduced price meals would have on eligibility, approved meal price status, and participation for the total population and for selected subgroups of students. The effect on federal reimbursements for the programs is also estimated.
