A modification of the Sarett and Cheldelin method of thiamine assay by the use of Lactobacillus fermenti 36 is outlined, and values are given for a number of blood samples assayed by this method as well as by a macrochemical method. The small amount of blood needed for a microbiologic assay is a distinct advantage over the macrochemical method usually employed. When the thiamine values obtained by the two methods are compared it is found that the values on human blood agreed very closely, but those for the blood of other species were not in such good agreement.
