Folic acid functions as a coenzyme in the biosynthesis of three amino acids, serine, histidine, and methionine, the purine ring and thymine. The major clinical manifestation of folic acid deficiency is megaloblastic anemia, presumably due to a lack of these "essential" metabolites.
The hematopoietic effect of folic acid metabolites when administered singly and in combination to patients with megaloblastic anemia has been studied. Significant but usually suboptimal responses have been obtained so far with serine, histidine, inosine, and thymidine.
